Righty ho, we have arrived at this bad boy... The big 50% brief.

At the beginning we were told to do it on something that we are interested in and enjoy. As sad as it sounds, I had no idea what to do it on. I then remembered my love of Cornwall and how much fun I had down there so I wanted to capture my love for all things Cornwall within this project.

Tourism, food, fishing, surfing, so many things that I could relate back to Cornwall but what to pick, that is the question. Then y friend mentioned the Cornish language in one of our texts and that sparked an idea.

When looking into it, I found out that the Kernow language is slowly dying out so I wanted to create something that will bring it back to life and in a modernized way. I wanted it to become trendy in a way so people would want to use it in certain points through their everyday life or if tourists visited they would be able to join in with the lingo.

I didn't want it to just be flat and have no personality, thinking back to the things I wanted to do during my 3rd year and I stumbles across my point of lino printing. It would create a nice homemade and organic which is what a lot of the designers in Cornwall do.

Starting with the classic Cornish items like pilchards, surfing, scones and pasties. To go with this imagery I found the Cornish words for each one. I wanted it to be in a very rustic and Celtic font to bring back the authenticity and history into the modernized prints.

To create the templates I started an illustrator file where I designed the illustrations and added the text in the correct placement. I then flipped them so they were mirrored ready to transfer onto the lino block. This would ensure the text is the correct way round after I have printed it.

This is one of my favourite projects I have done, very hands-on and messy which is what I love. I hope you like the outcomes as much as I do.

Much love,

Abs x
