Went Better Than Expected

Despite my portfolio interview being the most terrifying thing I have ever done, I must have hid it quite well due to the positive feedback. It is good to look back on this feedback and learn from it so this is what I am going to be doing on this post.

Some of the comments I got are as follows;

My opening slide worked well but when including brand logos, make sure to have them in black and white so it is cohesive. Not only this but it would have been useful to have a short statement at the beginning to say who I am rather than just saying it. This is something I will definitely do for my future ones as I can see how it was a bit messy having the different brand colours all on one page.

The first project 'Runway Ready' which was some freelance work I done for my friends clothing brand was good but it isn't my strongest piece. This should not have been the first project to show as it needs to start off strong. This is something I will remember and not do again.

'Time to Unwind' was the second project within my portfolio. This one was definitely my favourite piece to create and show. The panel said I clearly outlines the concept and design choices. They also liked my pattern design that added to the overall brand identity. However, I need to work on the typography for the logo as it isn't legible enough and pull out the design elements a bit more as they are the key features.

For my 'British Council' work it was mentioned to look into the typeface for the main body of text. I do also think that the text could be improved but because it was through the company I was working for they had a set template and fonts that needed to be followed.

I included my Playful Paws Brand Guidelines as it is one of my more recent pieces of work and I had a lot of things to discuss about it. I was so glad to get praise on this as it is my first brand guideline design. The liked seeing the development of ideas and the thought behind the typeface. One thing to note was that the edges of the smile should be the same as the typeface used. I did do this as it was mentioned in my Design Management presentation. However, I accidentally used old imagery which didn't include the updated logo which is my own fault. This is something I will make sure to check over if I were to use this piece again.

One of the last points was that it would have been good to have a question for Richard. In all honestly I was so nervous everything completely left my brain so the fact I was able to talk about my work for 10minutes straight is amazing. I will make sure to prepare a question for my interviewer in future portfolio reviews.

To say I was pleased and grateful for the feedback is an understatement. This was an experience and a half that will definitely help me with future portfolio reviews and interviews. I will now know what to include, what to emphasise and how to present myself.

I am so happy knowing that my interview was relaxed and I gave a professional projection of my work. They noticed that i was right on time which made me smile as I rehearsed it multiple times.

Overall it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be and was a good outcome considering I had never made a portfolio before. I am excited to take on more work, learn and improve.

Much love,

Abs x
